January a positive start to 2007 for Cardiff

2007 looks set to be a bumper year for construction in Cardiff with January seeing ground work begin for two of the city centre's most significant projects.

The first of which, a double building scheme called Meridian Gate that's been sloshing around since 2004, will provide new hotel and residential accommodation at the heart of Cardiff city centre. Designed by architects J.R Smart, the developer is Imperial Properties Ltd.

The development comprises two towers; the tallest of which is to be a Radisson SAS hotel and will rise to 21 floors; an estimated 63 m making it the sixth tallest building in Cardiff. Radisson expect to see their new hotel opening up in October 2008.

The other block will be substantially shorter at 11 floors, and approximately 33 metres high. Containing residential apartments, all of which have apparently already been sold off plan, it is recent proof that the Welsh capital is not immune to the trend for city living that is driving a construction boom in many British centres.

Adding to the increasingly busy construction scene is the commencement of ground-work on the 24,163 sq m John Lewis department store which forms the first phase of the massive £535 million St Davidís 2 shopping centre. The whole precinct is due to be completed by 2009 and demolition has already begun on a number of the other buildings currently occupying the development site to allow further construction.
