Manchesters Kampus With A K

Kampus, with a K, sounds rather German, but it's also a new 150 million pound development set to sit on the former Manchester Metropolitan University campus that's located off Aytoun Street.

Largely built in the sixties and seventies as a result of Harold Wilson's university expansion, the site became obsolete when the university upped and moved to their new home on Oxford Road.

With Aytoun Street within spitting distance of Piccadilly in the very heart of the city, and boasting some of the best transport links, it was always inevitable that a high density development would be planned for this area.

The scheme, which has now been approved in outline, includes some 500 new homes, two hotels, and a number of medium rise buildings, plus the reconstruction of some of the Victorian canalside properties, namely Minshull House, and the Minto & Turner Warehouse which along with the street they overlook, Little David Street constitute one of the last Victorian streets in Manchester that exists in its original form, albeit in poor condition.

In addition to the renovation of this historic thoroughfare into a functioning street again complete with shops and cafes, there will also be new landscaped public spaces, and a pavilion overlooking the canal.

In all, three new modern blocks are planned of between 12 and 14 storeys. Notably the existing MMU tower, presently clad in concrete, will be retained, although with an overhaul of both the interior and exterior, and renamed The Stack topped with an open rooftop restaurant. This will mark the tall point of the development with the other three blocks each slightly shorter.

Following the approval of the outline plan by Manchester City Council, the next step will be for the joint developers Capital & Centric and Henry Boot Developments to come up with a detailed planning application that sets out the scheme precisely.
