Much about the earlier building was lost, with the church having been gutted by fire in 1867. Although some of the fittings and a few of the most notable tombs, and the tower were saved, much was lost. The church was rebuilt in as close to the original form as possible but much of this was from memory.
No less than ten Archbishops of Canterbury were buried at Croydon Minster, including perhaps most notably the magnate John Whitgift whose legacy includes the Whitgift Foundation, the owner of the Whitgift Centre complex in central Croydon. This was due to Croydon Palace being one of the main residences of the Archbishops of Canterbury, so many of those who died locally were buried in the largest church in the area.
