St Marys Church

Images

  • St Mary's Church, Totnes

Other Information

  • The Parish & Priory Church of St Mary was constructed not only to serve Totnes itself but also to provide a place of worship for the Benedictine priory which stood nearby until it was dissolved in the English Reformation. This was a compromise agreement made between the Burgh and the Priory to share a building, and the associated construction costs.
  • The church consists of red Devonian sandstone, a three stage tower and an impressive stone screen from 1459 that still survives.
  • St Mary's is unusual in that despite being built in the medieval period extensive records remain about its construction with the master builder and architect known - Roger Crowden.
