The atrium at the north entrance for use by the public, whilst on the southern side it contains a private atrium for students and staff on a raised platform, suspended from steel girders over the ground floor lecture hall.
The use of the portholes as windows creates a deliberate ambiguity about the building making it impossible to actually gauge the number of floors inside. These windows in turn dictate the floor-to-floor dimensions. They are a surprisingly tall 4.547 metres for a college in order to accommodate two rows of 1.8 metre diameter windows.
The distinctive façade is made up of 28,000 anodised aluminium tiles based on the patterns of Morris wallpapers. These were designed with the help Cambridge mathematician Sir Roger Penrose.
