William Henry Lynn based the design for Chester Town Hall on the famous Cloth Hall in Ypres, later to be made iconic by World War One.
Chester Town Hall was opened by the then Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII. Also in attendance at the opening was William Gladstone.
Although the building has a tower, it was only in 1979 that the clock was actually installed in it. The reasons for this delay of over a hundred years are not exactly clear.
