Building Rating Other Information
- Elgin Cathedral was unique in design terms for a British Cathedral. Whilst Chichester Cathedral shares the double aisle design, only Elgin had three spires.
- The church was approximately 85 metres long, and 30 metres wide at the transepts. Francis H Groome in 1882 recorded that the former height of the central spire was 198 feet.
- The cathedral started to collapse on the 4th of December 1637 when a portion of the eastern roof fell victim to a gale although it had been stripped of its lead roof in 1567. The central tower notably collapsed on Easter Sunday, 1711. Interestingly, the older parts of the cathedral constructed in the 12th century from better quality stone suffered significantly less damage showing the difference caused by the 13th and 14th century value engineering.
- Gradual decline continued for many years until stabilisation of the site began in 1809 and very gradual reconstruction has been carried out since 1804.
- Since 1976 the Chapter House has been almost completely rebuilt whilst work has also been carried out on the western towers with them gradually approaching structural completion although they miss much decorative stonework. The interiors of the towers have been restored, and they are both capped by lead roofs.
- The two surviving west towers today stand at a height of 27.4 metres tall.
