The original St Mary Aldermary was burned down in the Great Fire of 1666. It was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in the Gothic style between 1679 and 1682.
The interior contains exquisite High Gothic fan vaulting on the ceiling of the Lady Chapel.
The cornices were added to the tower in 1701.
The church has many fans and architect critic Pevsner calls it "the chief surviving monument of the 17th century Gothic revival in the City and -- with Warwick -- the most important late 17th century Gothic church in England."
