Anne Bronte lived and died in a house that occupied the site in 1849.
The hotel originally 365 rooms, 52 chimneys and 12 floors, all symbolic of the calendar. Sadly the rooms have been reduced to 280 by refurbishment.
The hotel is built out of approximately 7 million locally produced yellow bricks from Hunmanby.
When opened the fashion was for salt water that was believed to be good for the health, hence the Victorian love of bathing in the sea. This is reflected in the hotel plumbing that can pipe both drinking water and sea water.
The Scarborough Hotel is one of the earliest purpose built hotels in Europe.
During German naval raids in 1914 the hotel, like much of Scarborough, was badly damaged by the bombardment.
