Other Information

  • Unlike the other architects who worked on parts of Hutchesontown, Spence decided to forgo the mixture of simple towers with square footprints and lower rise buildings for two superblocks more akin to Unite d'Habitation.
  • Although wall-like in nature, Spence designed this block and its neighbour so that they were actually interconnected towers of 40 maisonette apartments with communal balconies between them linking each vertical section together.
  • The balconies on the project were a key part of Spence's vision for animating the blocks. He imagined them as "when all the washing's out, it'll be like a great ship in full sail!"
  • Spence had originally imagined having single structural columns but this was considered impossible by the project engineers at Ove Arup. With the planned the structure of the blocks considered impossible, twin slanting columns were employed in their place but even this saw the cost of building each apartment increase to 3,000 breaking the then limit of 2,800 per unit.
  • Unfortunately the complex structure was difficult to maintain, something Spence had not considered when designing the buildings, and so faced with the rising cost of keeping Queen Elizabeth Square habitable, they were demolished in 1993.
  • The demolition of Queen Elizabeth Square was the largest controlled demolition in the United Kingdom since World War 2 which ended up killing a spectator.
