Marischal College was founded by James the VI of Scotland in 1593 as a university.
The 125 metre long granite facade and 72 metre tall tower were added in Edwardian times and opened in 1906. With these dimensions it is the second largest granite building in the world.
The building was reportedly a favourite of Adolf Hitler who wished to make it his main residence in Scotland in the event of a successful Nazi invasion.
Planning permission now exists to turn Marischal College into an office building whilst retaining the facades.
