Other Information

  • Wymondham Abbey was founded in 1107 by William D'Albini, Chief Butler to King Henry I, as a Priory of the great Benedictine Monastery of St. Albans.
  • Wymondham became an Abbey in its own right in 1448 until it was suppressed by Henry VIII in 1538.
  • A large portion of the Abbey remains, the nave between the two towers, but the rest of it was destroyed by Henry VIII in the ten years he owned it.
  • The abbey may have had a spire but its original form is under much dispute as few traces of it remain.
  • Building work was never finished on the abbey, one of the towers remains incomplete.
