St Edmunsbury Cathedral is the last unfinished Anglican Cathedral. Work is currently being undertaken on raising the central tower in traditional Gothic style.
Work started between 1501 and 1553 with the construction of the nave which was later altered in the 19th century.
Work on the unfinished North Transept and tower began in 1999 and was completed in 2005 along with eastern chapels. The tower has a central structure of 600,000 bricks but is faced with stone both internally and externally thus "faking" its look.
This construction marks a departure in recent English cathedral construction which has been modern showing a return to its Gothic roots.
St Edmunsbury became a cathedral in 1914.
