The Tyndale Monument commemorates William Tyndale who was the first person to translate the Bible into English.
It overlooks the village of North Nibley where Tyndale was born.
The enscription on the monument reads -
ERECTED A.D. 1866
IN GREATFUL REMEMBRANCE OF
WILLIAM TYNDALE
TRANSLATOR OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE
WHO FIRST CAUSED THE NEW TESTAMENT
TO BE PRINTED IN THE MOTHER TOUNGE
OF HIS COUNTRYMEN
BORN NEAR THIS SPOT HE SUFFERED
MARTYRDOM AT VILVORDEN IN
FLANDERS ON OCT 6 1536
The tower is open to the public, the key for it can be gotten from whoever is tower warden at the time. Their address is posted on the tower door.
