  • Originally this was the Great Stables in Buxton which accommodated 120 horses until was remodelled by Herny Currey into a grand hospital in 1859.
  • The Former Devonshire Hospital had what was the world's largest unsupported dome with a diameter of 47 metres, larger even than St Pauls cathedral.
  • The dome weighs 560 tons.
  • Today only two domes of this type in America are larger today.
  • In 2001 the hospital was purchased by Derby University who plan to transform it into a campus. The dome will however remain.
