Images Other Information
- Charing Cross Hospital Tower is built on 191 piles that are 14 metres deep with 7,000 tonnes of reinforced steel, 46,000 cubic metres of concrete, and 160 kilometres of wiring.
- The building is designed with the basic footprint of a cruciform. The concept behind this is that different parts of the cross can have different uses, as can be seen from the exterior where three of the wings of the crosses have external balconies. These contain the patient beds whilst the body of the cross has the teaching hospital and research laboratories.
- The building was topped out in April 1970 and was completed on time and on budget with the Queen officially opening it in April 1973.
