Building Rating Other Information
- The design of the building features a 34.5 metre deep footprint set along a north/south axis that is split into two separate wings with a recessed area in between to allow improved penetration of daylight and greater double aspect views.
- At the base of the building is a triple height entrance behind stainless steel columns, above which the next immediate three levels are articulated inside triple height window bays. The height of the entrance was set by the architect at what it is following an examination of Richard Roger's nearby 88 Wood Street which boasts one of similar proportions.
- Beyond this the recessed curtain wall is contained in double height window bays whilst the stainless steel clads the building all the way to the roof projecting past the stepped back upper floors to help form an outline.
- The stainless steel exterior, some 2,500 tonnes of material, is not simply decorative. It also conceals an external structural frame that allows the interior of 5 Aldermanbury Square to have column-free office space throughout. The spacing of the windows are dictated by the billets of stainless steel in the structure which are generally spaced on a 6 metre grid, but with secondary ones spaced at 3 metres.
- Streamlining the upper stages of the building Parry has employed an entasis curve, a similar technique to that used by the Greeks to create a more aesthetically pleasing convex curve.
