First Look At Project India

Project India, as it's been dubbed by Ian Simpson Architects, is a scheme at the early stages of redevelopment that if it goes ahead in this form, would see a new residential skyscraper constructed near West India Road less than half a mile from Canary Wharf.

The tower is at an early stage but is being developed by West Properties, the Manchester company that the architect has been successfully involved with for many years in their home city.

The design consists of a collection of five storey tall sections stacked on each other and angled in such a way that they cantilever out from the centre of the core creating a saw-toothed appearance. There's a certain element of familiarity to it thanks to the famous Tbilisi Roads Ministry Building in Georgia with the post-constructivism on show.

Residents will be able to enjoy floor to ceiling glazing whilst, the corners of each section provide the sort of mini winter gardens that have become a distinctive mark for Ian Simpson. The roof of each five floor grouping allows for the creation of a roof garden, a by-product of the unusual look that the tower boasts.

The project is still at an early stage of development, and it remains to be seen whether this design, or indeed any design for the site in question, will go ahead, not least as proposals for residential skyscrapers around Canary Wharf have yet to spread this far west.
