The Tallest Tower - Building The Shard

Channel 4 will be taking an in depth look at the construction of one of London's most controversial additions to its skyline, The Shard.

Filmed over four years the programme will look into the challenges that creating Western Europe’s tallest tower in such a densely populated area created, as well as following the story of developer Irvine Sellar and his dream to leave his lasting mark or as some might say blight on the Capital.

The Tallest Tower: Building the Shard, provides an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into the construction of the "love it or loathe it" scheme which was built amidst massive NIMBY opposition and in one of the worst recessions in living memory, making the feat all the more spectacular.

Construction of the tower has so far been quite a private affair with only errant foxes and the occasional trespassers gleaning a sneak peek at what will no doubt become one of London's best known landmarks in years to come.

It is designed by Renzo Piano, who is also responsible for other famous buildings such as Paris's Pompidou Centre. The tower was constructed using 100,000 tonnes of concrete, 11,468 glass panels, 500 tonnes of steel for the spire and the UK's tallest crane, and also came with a gruelling schedule that meant builders had to progress adding a new floor every seven days.

The programme will be shown on Channel 4 on Wednesday 2nd May 2012 at 9pm just in time for the removal of the crane from the site.
