SOMs Bifurcated Dublin Tower

Architects Skidmore Owings and Merrill have been working up designs for a new tower to grace Dublin's rather modest skyline.

To be located at North Wall Quay on the north bank of the River Liffey, the tower which is still in the visionary stage of design. Occupying a six acre site, if built the tower would stand at anything up to 130 metres, although gaining approval for such projects in the area has proved notoriously difficult in the past.

Constructed from steel and glass, the tower rises from its base and more or less immediately breaks off into what are almost two separate wings that culminate in two flat peaks with slender physical connections between them.

Angular in appearance, the two forks of the tower lean in opposite directions to each other, this with the angled facades lends movement to the tower and from a distance makes it appear to almost lean out over the river in what's almost a geometric prismatic manner.

The bifurcation of the tower, or forking if you speak English, not only lends the tower a unique and distinctive look on the skyline, but rather more practically allows light to flood into the upper floors by opening the innards of the block up as well as improving the airflow throughout the tower.

The facades are fully glazed affording the tower a sleek, crystalline look that's enhanced by the shaping of the facades. The orientation of the tower allows for maximum views towards Dublin, the Docklands and the Irish Sea.

The tower would house premium office space, as it is still in visionary stage meaning no planning applications have been filed and there's always the chance it won't make it off the drawing board.

Still, it's a good example of what can eventually be expected for the site, if not in design then in scale, if the Irish economy successfully recovers from the current depression it's experiencing.
