Images

  • South Kensington Museum, London

Other Information

  • John Belcher, later the architect of amongst other buildings Colchester Town Hall, was one of eight entries for the South Kensington Museum competition of 1891 coming first. Despite this his design was never carried through, and the end result is today's Victoria and Albert Museum.
  • Acclaimed by the press at the time, the design draws on the then under construction Imperial Institute of which the Queen's Tower survives imagining "Albertopolis" with an entire collection towers.
