Other Information

  • The Brighton Wheel is a semi-temporary and transportable ferris wheel with 36 gondolas and a maximum passenger capacity of 384 people.
  • The wheel has planning permission that allows it to stand from 2011 to 2016, during which time it should attract an estimated 250,000 visitors a year.
  • The wheel has proven highly controversial for some in Brighton who argue its existence sets a precedence for development east of Brighton Pier although numerous tall buildings already exist in the immediate vicinity.
  • The wheel was also opposed because it would interfere with what critics called a "quiet piece of sea front", that is the area immediately adjacent to Brighton Pier that attracts 6.5 million visitors a year, three times as many visitors as the Tower of London.
