The early parts of the church are Norman in origin, with the latter parts constructed in the period immediately before the Reformation.
The church spire is believed to be a later addition, perhaps of the late 14th century. It unusually has buttresses on it, presumably to carry the weight to the corners of the tower it stands on, and with a height of almost 200 feet was praised by Pevsner as one of the finest of all parish church spires.
