St Georges Church was, along with St Andrew's Church, planned as one of the two landmark churches in Edinburgh's New Town which was originally planned in 1767 although construction of St George's Church was impossible in the original planned location thanks to the fact it was purchased as a site for residential development before it could be built. As a result it is located on Shandwick Place and breaks the planned order of the New Town.
