Other Information

  • The Melville Monument is a monument to Lord Melville, one of the leading Scottish politicians of his day who occupied posts including Navy Secretary. It was thanks to this the column stands today - admirers of his in the Royal Navy raised funds of 3500.00 for the monument in 1817.
  • The column was originally just that, a column, modeled on Trajan's Column in Rome. It was only in 1828 that it was decided to erect a statue on the top to Melville himself.
