- St Mary de Castro was founded by Henry the First in 1107 and may or may not depending on the source, have been previously occupied by a Saxon church. It was run from within the castle as a collegiate church specifically for the use of the royal family of the day.
- The Romanesque design was rebuilt into Gothic in about 1180 with various details added and gradually extended culminating in the erection of a spire in about 1400 A.D.
- St Mary de Castro is the alleged church Geoffery Chaucer got married in. Henry the VI also used the church frequently as a child and was even knighted there to strengthen his claim to the throne.
