  • The needle was originally erected in about 1500 B.C in Egypt and then taken by the Romans to Alexandria in 12 BC where it remained for 1800 years.
  • It was given to the British government by the Viceroy of Cairo in 1819 but remained in Egypt until 1877 due to the reluctance of the British to pay for its transport.
  • The needle was shipped to Britain in 1877but the ship carrying it capsized and it took a full four months before the needle was salvaged and finally found its way to London.
  • Cleopatras Needle contains unrepaired shrapnel damage from a bombing raid in World War 1.
  • There are similiar needles in New York and Paris.
  • The needle is the oldest structure standing in London.
