  • The cathedral was founded in 1093 and contains the remains of St Cuthbert which are on public view for the morbid or pilgrims.
  • The 66m tall tower is 325 steps to the top.
  • From 1071 to 1836 it was the seat of the Prince Bishops of Durham. In medieval times they had enjoyed considerable autonomy including the freedom to mint their own coins and raise armies.
  • Today Durham Cathedral is a world heritage site along with the nearby castle and considered one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Europe.
