  • Civic Centre, Ipswich

Other Information

  • In 1951, partly thanks to local slum clearances, Ipswich Borough Council had acquired a site that was included in the local development plan as a potential new headquarters.
  • Messrs Vine & Vine won an architectural competition in 1959 for the design of a new civic centre for Ipswich which included not only a new tower headquarters for the council but rebuilding of the roads in the area, and underneath the ground, a huge car park.
  • Construction work began on the basement levels in 1964, progressing finally to the tower in 1968 with completion in 1969.
  • The Civic Centre closed in 2006 with the local council moving to a new custom built headquarters.
  • The site was purchased by Turnstone Estates in 2007 who intended to construct a new shopping mall and proceeded to demolish the old council headquarters in 2008. Demolition was conducted by CDC Demolition over a 30 week period.
