Amex House Also known as American Express Building

Other Information

  • Amex House is built on a site which was originally chalk. The foundation hole had to be sunk to a depth of about 16 metres, and 100,000 tonnes of chalk excavated before construction could begin. The foundation consists of 45,000 tonnes of concrete, with 2,000 tonnes of structural steel above ground.
  • The building is described by some as "classic" late modernism with its clean horizontal lines thanks to the layered effect of white glass reinforced plastic panels between each of the levels of floor to ceiling glazing. By employing Glass Reinforced Plastic, Gollins, Melvin and Ward were making the first such use in the United Kingdom of the material.
  • Reducing the profile of the building on the upper level is a recessed top floor. The corners of the building are chamfered reducing the bulk further, whilst the lower three floors are recessed on the southern approach. This combined with the columns framing the entry point creating the impression of a triple height entrance.
  • Following the construction of a new headquarters for American Express in Brighton next door, the building is set to be demolished in 2016 unless it receives listed building status.
