Christ Church Also known as Cardinal College Church and Priory of St Frideswide

Other Information

  • Christ Church is the smallest "traditional" cathedral in England. It was formerly part of the Priory of St Frideswide and benefited from the transfer of many assets from Osney Abbey, or Osney Cathedral as it was later known.
  • Work on the existing church was started in 1525 by Cardinal Wosley as part of his planned college, but never finished according to his grand design thanks to his hasty fall from grace. It's for this reason the original name of the building was "Cardinal College Church".
  • Thanks to its build period that effectively saw the end of the Middle Ages the church has some interesting pieces of hybrid architecture, most notably fan vaulting in the choir that is also integrated with pseudo hammer-beams.
  • Christ Church is used as one of the locations in Harry Potter.
