Other Information

  • The Sceaux Gardens Estate blocks of Lakanal and Marie Curie are early examples of public housing using a maisonette layout. As such there was concern that the external balconies would lack privacy, something considered paramount at the time. These concerns were overcome when it was pointed out the relatively tall height of the blocks would give a level of privacy to the balconies.
  • Lakanal and Marie Curie span a length of 57 metres and 12.5 metres, and rise to a height of 42.67 metres.
  • The internal partitions of the buildings were particularly poor upon completion with plasterboard walls used except in the case of the corridor walls. As a result neighbours could easily hear each other.
  • Lakanal was the scene of a fire that occurred on the 3rd of July 2009 which killed six people and injured twenty more.
