  • John Travers Cornwell, better known as Jack, was a 16 year old posthumous Victoria Cross winner who died during the battle of Jutland who had grown up in Manor Park, and who became a national hero in the wake of his death and the inconclusive result of the battle of Jutland.
  • The current block of flats stands on the site of a former school named after him, a nearby street is also named after Jack Cornwell, whilst a local pub commemorates his medal.
