Other Information

  • The London Assembly has been designed as a giant ampitheatre with all the levels snaking around the edge of the building in a spiral over looking the debating chamber; a concept first tried by Foster + Partners for the German Parliament they rebuilt in Berlin.
  • The diamond glass cladding was designed by John Shuttleworth, now of Make Architects, who went on to cover the whole of 30 St Mary's Axe in a similar look. Here it is orientated to the north of the building to allow the maximum penetration of sunlight on a zone that gets the least.
  • London City Hall is partly funded out of the profits from the adjacent More London development.
  • Mounted on top of the building in 2007 was a solar array intended to help generate power. Installed during construction were boreholes that provide the building with some of its cooling, whilst the near-spherical shape is intended in part to help create natural ventilation throughout.
