The entire development in Branshome, which housed almost 30,000 people at its peak, came into being thanks to the heavy bombing of Hull in World War 2. As the hardest hit city in the United Kingdom proportionately there was a massive need for new housing.
Originally the plans saw the creation of a New Town, but this gradually changed to a single large estate with thousands of low-rise housing units and two towers blocks, Gatwick House and Padstow House all built from 1967 to 1981.
